Drawings
This panel was also inspired by the old monster movies, particularly The Blob. Oil is the monster here because although it does not mix with water, it still contaminates the water we need to survive. In addition to The Blob, I remember looking at some of Gustave Dore's illustrations for The Divine Comedy, and found one image of sinners represented with their bodies in the form of tormented trees.
We the consumers are represented as trees in this drawing with bare limbs, agitated postures and screaming faces because the conflict over the valuable resources of oil and water have made monsters out of us; now we are being punished. We are surrounded by water that we need to drink, yet we can't quench our thirst because we are also surrounded by the growing black, sticky contaminated oil blob.
