This painting was inspired by Joyce Carol Oates's short story, Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? Barbie is cast as Connie, the teenage girl in the story who caught the attention of the wrong kind of man - Arnold Friend. Ironic that his name is "Friend", isn't it? Would a friend really say this to you - "Promise was not to come in unless you touch that phone."

Although Barbie keeps on smiling despite the threat, I wanted to create the impression of a fear factor similar to that of an old scary movie filmed in black and white. I resolved to paint the inside of the house in a neutral palette, but lurking outside the door, watching her...Could the color represent a fatal attraction?
