At the time in one of my art classes we were working on a project in which we had to channel the styling methods of one of three choice artists—one of them being Kara Walker, which was my choice. Technically, the secured bench would qualify as the Dada "readymade" component, but incorporating the bench into this piece while looking at Kara Walker I thought would make the cat, a lost love, seem less like a ghost and more like a lovely memory. I grew up with cats, and a day has never gone by when I never missed having a cat, or any kind of best friend like that. With making that bench as part of this piece I therefore wanted to make the silhouette as life-size as possible.
